Level IIIA

• Maximum soft armor protection; stops high-velocity handguns:
• .357 SIG FMJ (125 gr, 1,450 fps)
• .44 Magnum SJHP (240 gr, 1,400 fps)

Level III

• Hard armor; stops common rifle rounds (non-armor-piercing):
• 7.62×51mm NATO FMJ (.308 Win, 147 gr, 2,780 fps)
• 5.56×45mm NATO FMJ (M193, 55 gr, 3,200 fps)

Level III+ (industry designation, not official NIJ)

• Enhanced rifle protection:
• More penetrative rifle rounds, e.g., M855 5.56 NATO, steel-core 7.62×39

Level IV

• Hard armor; stops armor-piercing rifle rounds:
• .30-06 M2 AP (166 gr, 2,850 fps)
